Clicking
on "Route Directory " opens the Main Route which includes the
Running Time calculator and the New Position calculator. The Main
Route is basically the shortest route to Ketchikan with links to
alternate routes. When an alternate route is reached there is an
option to stay on the Main Route or go to the Alternate Route. No
matter which route is being used, there are links to all the remaining
routes when they are reached.

When
a new route is choosen the overall milage to destination will automatically
be recalculated. Main Route and Alternate Route information below
is to help decide which route would be the best to take when arriving
at a junction. |
Main
Route: The Main Route is the base for the Johansen's
Handbook. Generally speaking, it is the shortest route up the inside
passage from Seattle to Ketchikan with the exception of the leg
from Seattle to Friday Harbor. The Main Route goes up the inside
waters through LaConner and by Anacortes.
Alternate
Route #1- Shortest Route Seattle to Friday Harbor: This
route goes from Shilshole Bay past Port Townsend, around Point Partridge
and then into the San Juan Islands at Cattle Point. This is the
shortest route but, depending on the weather, can be quite uncomfortable
after passing Marrowstone Point going north because of the possible
heavy tide rips and open water until Cattle Point. This route saves
17.5 miles over the Main Route.
Alternate
Route #2 - Yuculta Rapids, Stuart Island Cutoff: This
route goes across Straits of Georgia just after departing Nanaimo
going north. Since the Main Route up the Straits of Georgia is a
long open stretch, the alternate route is a viable choice if the
weather is nasty. This route is 8.8 miles longer than the Main Route.

Alternate
Route #3 - Jackson Pass Cutoff: This route is
an alternate to Milbanke Sound which is open to the ocean. Even
if there is little wind there can be a large swell which is on your
beam from Ivory Island to Vancouver Rock. Northbound, cutoff the
Main Route just before Ivory Island. Jackson Narrows is narrow,
but taken at near high water is passable. I have been through with
a 50 foot boat drawing 6 feet of water at mid tide with no problem. This route
adds 8.0 miles to the Main Route.
Alternate
Route #4 - Prince Rupert Cutoff: This route goes
into Prince Rupert and out through Metlakatla Pass when northbound.
This route by-passes Chatham Sound. More important, Prince Rupert
southbound is the first place to check into Canadian Customs. The
route out of Prince Rupert northbound through Metlakatla Pass looks intimidating
on a chart but is well market with bouys and ranges. This route
adds 6.5 miles to the Main Route.
